On January 22, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy submitted a draft law on multiple citizenship to the Verkhovna Rada. It can be obtained by descendants of Ukrainians who at different times left the country and went to Europe, the USA, Canada, Asian countries, and Latin America. Also, they want to give Ukrainian passports to foreign volunteers, but not to citizens of Russia.
The text of the document appeared on the website of the parliament.
“This document will allow all ethnic Ukrainians and their descendants from different countries of the world to have Ukrainian citizenship. Of course, except for citizens of Russia,” the president emphasized in a congratulatory video on the occasion of the Day of the National Assembly of Ukraine.
The explanatory note to the draft law states that the Verkhovna Rada should determine the list of states whose citizens can obtain a Ukrainian passport in a simplified manner, as well as determine the specifics of acquiring Ukrainian citizenship by certain categories of persons.
Parliamentarians should also determine the category of persons who will submit an obligation to terminate foreign citizenship in order to acquire Ukrainian citizenship.
