Sholokhovskyi Waterfall, also known as “Red Stone” by the locals, is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in natural beauty and ancient history.
Named for its distinctive red granite, which can be found throughout the Dnipropetrovsk region, Sholokhovskyi Waterfall is a relatively small cascade waterfall, with a length of about 14 meters and drops ranging from a few centimeters to several meters. The waterfall originates from a tributary of the Bazavluk River.
Scientific research has shown that this cascading waterfall was formed during the Mesozoic Era, 252 million years ago. Sholokhovskyi (Tokivskyi) Cascade Waterfall is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful places in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The 140-meter waterfall consists not only of cascades, the height of which reaches about one and a half meters, but also of rapids and granite “hot tubs”, which are its highlight.
Sholokhovskyi Waterfall is the “younger brother” of the Dnieper rapids, a natural monument created by the spurs of the Ukrainian crystalline shield back in the Mesozoic era. A number of archaeological excavations have been carried out on this territory, which resulted in the discovery of traces of ancient settlements.
How to get there:
- By train: To the stop “Tik” (Tokivskyi granite quarry).
- By car: To the village of Tokivske.
The two most convenient routes are:
- From the city of Nikopol through the village of Oleksiivka to the village of Leninske, from the outskirts of which there are 15 km of steppe roads towards the quarry and the village of Tokivske, then along one of the banks of the Kamyanka River.
- Through the city of Pokrov and the village of Sholokhove, after the bridge over the Kamyanka River, turn right and follow along the coast.
It is important to note that Sholokhovskyi Waterfall is currently located in a zone of active hostilities. As a result of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the area around the waterfall has been heavily damaged. It is not currently safe to visit the waterfall.
